Be Healthy to Be Happy

Your attitude can go a long way toward making you happy. How conscientious you are about checking your attitude to make sure that you’re telling yourself the truth and confronting your negativity will make a big difference to your happiness. But I think you have to agree that without good health, it’s impossible to maintain peak happiness.

Take a look at this list and pick out something to do that will help you improve your health and maintain it.

  1. Exercise – did you know that people who exercise regularly live about 5 to 7 years longer than inactive people? Try to get about 30 minutes of exercise on most days.
  1. Watch Your Weight – obesity is linked to heart disease, type II diabetes, several other health conditions, and reduced life expectancy. Find out what your ideal weight is and find a plan to help you get there. It’s easier than ever these days because we all have more options. Do it.
  1. Stop smoking – people who smoke die about 10 years earlier than if they had never smoked, BUT if you stop smoking, you can get most of those years back.
  1. Get enough sleep – get the amount of sleep that is right for you. Doctors generally recommend around seven hours per night. It helps to repair your body and regenerate you overall.
  1. Eat smart – it easier than ever these days to eat healthfully because we have a lot of choices. To make it simple, try to build your diet around vegetables and fruits, lean sources of protein, and complex carbohydrates. If you take the time to learn a little bit about good nutrition and food choices, you’ll find that there’s enough out there to choose from so that you can be healthy and not feel deprived.
  1. Floss – you might not know how important this is, and not just for your teeth. Flossing removes bacteria that could otherwise cause inflammation in your gums. This inflammation activates your body’s inflammatory response; this in turn raises your blood pressure and puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke. It can also damage brain tissue. Studies are showing that inflammation is at the core of much disease today; flossing is an easy way to guard your body against inflammation.
  1. Socialize – people with a strong social network of family and friends live longer than those who are not connected to others. Connection is an antidote for stress.
  1. Get a check up – you will live a longer, healthier life if potential problems like diabetes or heart disease are caught early.

These are minimal things you can do to stay happy and healthy. Consider them. They take a little work, but there’s a great payoff.

Dissolve Your Self Doubt

TEGlogoAll of us have great skills and abilities that we have been born with or that have come to us very naturally. Some people tap into these talents and use them to create exciting opportunity in their lives. Many people, however, never fully express themselves and their own capabilities and they pay a great price for it.

Take a close look at anyone who has suppressed themselves in at least one area of their life. They had a talent of some sort but decided not to pursue it any longer for one reason or another; failure, ridicule, pain and so on. In essence, they gave up on a dream.

What you will notice is that people who have gone through this kind of experience tend to carry some kind of burden with them. There is a part of them that always wonders what might have been if they had not given up on their dream. The entire dilemma has been caused by one root issue and it debilitates huge numbers of people all of the time. That issue is self doubt.

When you doubt yourself or your ability to persist in the face of adversity, you immediately cut yourself off from the internal strength and the resourcefulness required to succeed in life.

Think about professionals, in any arena, who are at the top of their game. They are admired and respected by everyone and you know by watching them, that there isn’t a shadow of doubt in their mind that they have what it takes to accomplish their goals. Even when they miss the mark or have a temporary set back, they have conditioned themselves to move forward with the knowing that their next attempt will be successful.

The key word here is “conditioning”. These elite professionals have carefully and repeatedly programmed their mind with thoughts of success, winning and self confidence. Very often it was done deliberately with the understanding that pique confidence comes as a result of practice. Just like you practice if you want to be a better singer, athlete, speaker or business person.

When you learn how to dissolve your own self doubt and replace that doubt with a strong, confident inner voice that tells you to keep going in the face of adversity, you allow all of your natural talents flow. When you reach this level of life, you automatically feel happier and you look for more opportunity to get even better at what already comes naturally.

Using Affirmations

TEGlogoHave you ever struggled to form a new habit? If so you are not alone, most people struggle with this on a regular basis. I know I do. When it comes to forming a habit you really need to have a positive mindset. You have to be open to allowing yourself to make changes. Never is it as easy as it sounds.

One thing that can help you with this is to use positive affirmations. An affirmation is a short sentence or two that helps to reinforce positive thoughts. Here’s a few examples.

I respect by body and treat it well by eating as many healthy and natural foods as possible.

I appreciate my money and use it to pay my bills and to provide shelter for my family.

I appreciate my friends and family and treat them with respect.

So why would you want to start using affirmations? A good example is if you find that you are a spur of the minute spender. When you see something you like you simply charge it to your credit card. Later on you may regret your purchase but you cannot return the item.

By using a money related affirmation you will start to be more aware of how and where you are spending your money. Think about having to provide a home for your family, and putting food on the table instead. When you begin to value your money for those you love, you can reduce and eventually eliminate your bad spending habits.

Now this is not a quick fix at all. You still need to make good choices and have the willpower and determination to stick to your new habit. But if you start saying affirmations twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, they will help you keep positive.

Bad habits can destroy your life, so it is worth taking the time to break them and replace them with new ones. Again with the money example, what would happen if you are spending your mortgage money on your whims? You will probably end up losing your home and possibly your family too. Would that be worth it?

By taking the time to work on improving your outlook on your life with affirmations, you can make huge positive changes in your mindset. Think how great it will be when you have enough money to take your family on that wonderful vacation?

Go find some affirmations that hold meaning for you, and start saying them to yourself at least twice a day.

Willpower & Discipline

TEGlogoAs you know it takes mindset, willpower and discipline to form good habits. Only then can you really reach your highest potential and get the most out of life. All three of these things work together and while this may sound simple, it is not always that easy.

When you have willpower you will find it easier to commit to performing a certain task. You may have set yourself goals that you want to meet. Willpower does not come naturally and it takes time, effort and self-control to use effectively.

The thing with willpower is that you do not always see your results immediately. This can be a little daunting to some people, you are putting in the hard work without seeing any results. This can easily make you feel like giving up.

Willpower includes self-discipline which must be sustained in order to reach your goals. A great example of this is with weight loss and exercising. You have to eat healthy and exercise regularly to achieve results.

The best way to form a good habit is by repeating the task or activity over and over again. The more you do something the easier it becomes. You stop viewing it as a chore and accept it as part of your normal routine. This shift gives you a new mindset. One of success, not trauma.

This same principle applies to breaking bad habits. It takes lots of repetition to stop smoking for example, or to cut out sugar. You need your willpower and your discipline to reach your goals. When your mindset shifts to preference for the new goals over the old habits, applaud your success!

When you repeat something you are creating a new routine. When your new routine becomes second nature, then you have formed a good habit. This doesn’t always have to take that long either. If you are determined to form a new habit you can do so in as little as 21 days.

Another ingredient to help you form and keep your good habits is that of motivation. You require motivation to develop willpower and to stay disciplined. There are many modes of motivation. You may be told by your doctor that unless you quit smoking you will develop lung cancer. Or if you don’t change your diet you will most likely suffer a heart attack. This type of motivation can be viewed almost as a threat.

The other type of motivation is when you have the desire to change, it comes from a force deep within you. Once you have this type of motivation your willpower and discipline levels will increase. As you start your journey you will find that nothing can stop you, your mindset is totally focused on your end goal. That is the shift that forms a new, lifelong habit.

Growing Good Habits

TEGlogoDo you have dreams and desires for your life? If so, that is wonderful, but do you really know how you are going to achieve all of these things? One way to do just this is by growing your life with good habits. This article will take a look at some general, good habits that will help you with this.

The first few habits you should form to help you grow your life are based around your health. Without good health you won’t get very far. So get into the habit of exercising and eating healthy foods. You don’t have to go crazy and change everything in one day. Just starting adding more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. Then add in an evening or morning walk. Once you do these things repeatedly a new habit will be formed.

One of the things I found very empowering in making better food choices was making choices. Often I would eat multiple foods that were not good for me. I started dropping many of them one by one and by choosing to substitute one item for another healthier, but equally satisfying alternative. I have tried so many new foods this way!

How good are you with your finances? Do you pay your bills on time? Do you have any type of savings or retirement plan in place? If not this is another habit you need to create. Start working on saving a little money each paycheck. Know where you spend your money, if you have to use a spreadsheet and track your income and your expenses. This way you will really know what shape your finances are in.

Make use of technology to help stay organized in your life. This includes using calendars, daily and weekly planners, to-do lists and more. There really is an App for just about everything these days. With everyone having at least one mobile device use an App that will sync to your home computer, so you are always up to date.

Another type of plan you need to grow your life is that of having a future or life plan. Do you know where you would like to be in 10 years from now? What job will you be doing, or where will you live?

There is no reason why you can’t map all of this out. When you do this, you can then just work backwards and create the steps of how to reach your goals. As you see each step you will know if forming a new habit is required. One such habit could be to save $100 extra each month. Or it may include the habit of learning a new skill to help you get that promotion, which in turn allows you to live the lifestyle you are dreaming of.

It is possible to improve your life just by forming some good habits. Think about the lifestyle you want and then form habits that will help you reach and enjoy it.

Good Habits

TEGlogoGood habits are necessary in all areas of our lives. From losing weight, to learning how to manage your finances successfully. This article will take a quick look at why good habits are great to have, and how you can go about forming them.

Personal Habits

Can you easily identify any good habits you already have? Do you exercise regularly? Do you organize your bills so you don’t miss paying them on time? While these things may seem small they are good habits that help you stay organized with your life.

When you begin to perform tasks without thinking, this means that they have already become a habit. Good for you! If a certain task or chore seems like a daily effort, this is because it has not become habitual yet. The good news is that it only takes 3 weeks for something to become a habit. The hardest part is getting through those first few weeks.

There are certainly plenty of areas in your personal life that could benefit by forming habits. Examples of these would include exercising regularly, making time to play with your children, having a date night with your spouse, learning new skills and planning your upcoming daily/weekly/monthly schedule.

Many of these things can be easily planned and arranged by using a calendar. The act of planning will then become a new habit. This will in turn improve many areas in your life. You will find that you have more time to spend with your family, do some of the things you have been putting off, and that you actually do have some free time.

Business Habits

When it comes to the business side of habits things like preparation for meetings, correspondence review and creating a to-do list all fall into the habit category.

You have to open and read your business emails to stay on top of your work schedule. If you don’t respond to customer service issues, you will certainly lose customers.

Creating a to-do list is probably one of the best business related habits you can form. A to-do list can be categorized in different ways, by due date, by importance of the job or by the amount of time required.

Once you have a to-do list in place then you can be more productive. Each morning your list is waiting and you just pick up from where you left off the day before.

You could begin by listing the habits you currently have and then create a list of ones you would like to form. Pick one and start working on it for a short set time. The Pomodoro Technique indicates that 20 minutes is ideal. Set your timer for 20 minutes and you are just a few minutes away from progress!

Habits for Success

TEGlogoHave you noticed that some people just seem to be more successful than others? Why is this? Well it is not because they were born with a streak of luck, it is because they know how to form good habits. Here are some tips that may help you create that successful life you are dreaming of.

Your Diet – what you feed your body eventually shows up on the outside. Your diet can reflect not just on your skin and by adding pounds, it can also make you feel good or bad about yourself. By just eating healthier and drinking more water you will notice a difference in a very short time.

Exercise – this goes hand in hand with your diet. If you don’t stay active your joints begin to stiffen up. And being “old” is not a criteria for joint pain anymore! You may notice that you don’t sleep well,  or you feel miserable or tired, and maybe look much older than you really are. Exercising regularly will give you a huge energy boost, give you a feeling of accomplishment and increase your productivity levels.

Mind Set – do you often feel discouraged, unable to achieve your goals or envious of those who appear more fortunate than you? Then it is time to change your mindset. You need to think positive thoughts, spend time with people who make you feel wonderful and focus on what pleases you. Inject some good motivational quotes into your day and start repeating them frequently.

Help Others – reduce the amount of time you spend thinking about negative situations that come up in your day and try and perform some act of kindness instead. This could be offering to pay for a coffee for the person next in line. It might be visiting an elderly neighbor. Or it could be sending an email or thank you note to someone you haven’t talked to in a while. Performing a kind act, can add happiness in your life and even bring you all kinds of rewards in return.

Stop Procrastinating – do you find that you are always putting things off? Then you wonder why things don’t get accomplished. Make the effort to do something. And finish it. The Pomodoro Technique suggests that small blocks of time (20 minutes with a timer) are enough to make big things happen! Tidy up your office or clean out your basement, one short period (Pomodoro) at a time. Once you start actively doing something you will feel better about yourself and have a sense of accomplishment. Often you may find it hard to stop when the timer goes off!

No More Complaining – do people view you as a complainer? Have you been in the company of a chronic complainer? That is not a welcome trait to have at all. Replace any complaining with small actions. If you are having trouble learning something new, blaming others doesn’t help. Instead find someone who does the task well, ask for help and tackle it as a challenge.

All of the above points are ones that you can change into positive habits. By doing so, success is sure to “show-up” in your daily life. You will benefit from an increased sense of accomplishment and your self-confidence will rise.
